On Sunday 22 March 2009, the finals were held for the Miss World Australia, Queensland.  Our former Principal, Denise Dean was on the judging panel along with key representatives of Channel 9 and Channel 10.  The full day of judging was not an easy call for the panel, who witnessed the 20 contestants performing their commitment speech, battling it out in a fitness bootcamp plus presenting an entertaining showpiece highlighting their talent.  The Miss World competition is not simply a judgement of "beauty".  The finalists are intelligent ambassadors who possess a powerful voice to assist Asutralian charities.  The Miss World organisation has assisted in raising more than $500 million as part of their "Beauty with a Purpose" initiatives, and have helped to redefine the judgement of beauty to "a healthy body image".  The competition serves as a wonderful springboard for ambitious young women who strive for personal development growth, and Denise Dean commended the Miss World Australia experience to those who aspire to help others, with the added bonus of personal rewards.  For more information, please visit www.missworldaustralia.com.au

Wednesday 3 March 2010, was a significant day on the PBCA calendar.  As we launched into our 12th year of delivering VET to high school students, this is the second year which students attend for a full day of learning.  This year sees our overall enrolments jump to record numbers, with students eager to learn the art of acrylic nails, makeup skills and professional facials, along with the essential retail skills of communication, selling and providing service for clients.   We hope all our VET students enjoy their learning this year!

During 2009, we welcomed a group of students organised by Worklinks, for an industry morning.  The Northside Brisbane students from Grades 10, 11 and 12, were eager to look and learn about the beauty industry.  We showed them what a beauty therapist does on a usual day in the salon, and then let them try their skills at makeup application.  Overall a successful morning for all the students.

Also during 2009, Professional Beauty College of Australia attended numerous high school career expos and industry talks to inform interested students about the wide range of career options and pathways available.  Talking to students at this level is very important

and gives them the option to commence their beauty training from Grades 10 or 11 in our

VET program.

Since 2002, Professional Beauty College of Australia has been proud to be the supplier of the Official Make-up Team for the Australian Fashion Design Awards organized by the National Retail Association.

Pevonia Botanica Student of the Year 2006

Congratulations Shenae McMahon!

(Shenae is centre right)

Shenae was truly ecstatic when she found out that PBCA and Pevonia Botanica had chosen her as the 2006 Student of the Year.

At the presentation of her award, Shenae said changes in industry award rates and versatile job options attracted her to the industry.

“I’ve always been creative and I’m addicted to the thrill of making people feel confident and beautiful – it’s also an industry where you continue to learn and be challenged by new techniques, therapies and technologies,” she said.

Shenae works at Tranquility Hair Body & Soul Day Spa at Newtown, Ipswich and was fortunate enough to commence at the spa before she finished her Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy. We wish Shenae all the best for her future.

For Mother's Day 2006, PBCA played host to 5 very special mothers of sick children. The mums were treated to a day of bliss and pampering and the first port of call by limo was our college.A team of trainers and students took over and treated the mums to a fabulous facial, manicure and make-up makeover before being whisked away for lunch (by limo of course). The Today Show aired the segment just before Mother's Day making us feel privileged that we had touched the lives of some very special mums whose daily life is in hospital with their children. The mums looked gorgeous when they left the college - just have a look at our photos!

Lost time to makeup

By Candy Davis

LAST YEAR, Rebecca Edwards felt as if she was stuck in the same boat as thousands of other school leavers - anxious about what her future would bring once she graduated from Year 12.

The St Rita's College student had tried work experience in a law firm and found the general office work to be "too boring".

After having contemplated a variety of other avenues, including retail, she stumbled across the Professional Beauty College of Australia on a school excursion for a vocational education subject.

"I'd always been interested in beauty but never actually considered it a valid career option before then," Ms Edwards said. "I knew that I really wanted a `hands-on' career where I wasn't stuck in an office all day and I could help all kinds of people."

For Ms Edwards, jumping at the opportunity to do some work experience with Ella Bache, while still in school, helped seal the deal. From then on, she said she knew what she was destined to do.

"I really wanted to find a traineeship in beauty but there just aren't any out there," she said. "I knew I would have to work really hard to help pay for my studies so I was in the process of planning the best way to study when I first heard about the scholarship."

Ms Edwards was the first person to be awarded Professional Beauty College of Australia's $5000 scholarship which is hoped will be an annual award. She used the funding to enroll in a six-week nail technology course, from which she has since graduated, and is working on a Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy.

"I was absolutely desperate to get the scholarship and start my training as soon as I could," she said. "Now I am well on my way to achieving my goal of opening my own salon. I love coming here and learning, I don't even mind the homework we have to do because it's fun and interesting to me."

Apart from her outstanding scholarship application, Ms Edwards used a photograph of herself as a toddler with lipstick smeared all over her face.

The then College director Denise Dean says she still remembers the application.

Ms Dean said the beauty college aimed to provide students with "more scope" in the industry, increase their confidence and develop and nurture their natural ability.

"We teach all the underpinning knowledge that you need to have as building blocks for a successful career in beauty therapy," she said. "Students have practical experience in class as well as with the public and graduate with the skills and qualifications to go straight into the workforce."

Ms Dean said the beauty industry ran a variety of careers, from the ever-popular cruise liners and resort day spas, to running a business, working in a salon, fashion styling, department store assistants, freelance and special project work.

"Beauty therapy is an industry that offers big career advancements for people who are willing to put in the hard yards, complete their studies and get out there and make their dreams come true," Ms Dean said. "So many of our students have made something of themselves and a lot of their initial motivation comes from within - they want to achieve in an area of personal interest."

Ms Dean said beauty therapy was an industry where the professionals continued to learn new skills throughout their entire careers. "You will never get bored in the beauty industry," Ms Dean said.
