Have you ever heard someone say, “I’ll get to living that dream once I have all my ducks in a row”. Have you even, perhaps secretly said it to yourself?!? If you’ve been considering starting your business, but never committed and jumped in, then you too might have fallen victim to “Ducks in a Row” thinking – and make no mistake – it’s holding you back from the possibility of a better life.
Let me ask you a question – did you have all your ducks in a row when you first fell in love? Was the timing perfect, with plenty of spare time in your schedule for various dates and outings, were their hobbies, interests and social circle a perfect match for yours, and did they live conveniently next door? Or was it a case of stretched schedules, a complete mismatch of hobbies, interests and even social circles, and practically living in your car because they lived on the other side of town? (My story was definitely the latter – I learned to love an even busier schedule packed with after-work dates, I enjoyed indoor rock climbing and kayaking to my great surprise, and I even learned to love driving from Maribyrnong to Springvale!)
Were your ducks all in a row when you had your first child, with a perfectly prepared nursery, ample savings for private school and every cupboard child-proofed in advance? Or did you figure it out as you went along somehow enjoying the messy adventure along the way? How about the time you took that holiday of a lifetime, moved on to a different job, or moved house? Were all your ducks in a row?
If they were, and your life has always been perfectly planned and executed, well first of all, CONGRATULATIONS! (And by the way, how the heck did you manage that?!) But seriously, if that’s the case, then it’s possible that small business ownership is not for you. It’s sometimes tough, often uncertain and nearly ALWAYS messy. But if you’re like the rest of us – a perfectly imperfect, planned-to-a-point and then take-a-leap-of-faith-type human, then this CAN work.
When you’re making a major life decision like starting your own business, not having a plan is simply not an option. But waiting for the stars to align, the market to be perfectly primed and everything in your life to be neat and tidy is self-sabotage at its’ sneakiest. We get it. We took the leap ourselves and we prepared as well as we could. But at the end of the day, we backed ourselves. We realised that it was now or never. And we jumped.
We believe that with the right support, you can make the jump too…even if you still have a stray duck here and there. We can’t wait to support you, show you the ropes, be your cheer squad and help you kick any errant ducks to the curb. If you’re full of drive, energised and excited by the dream of your business and feel like it’s time for something more, then we want to help you achieve your own success.
Side note on the out-of-line ducks – I’ve got a great recipe for Duck Stew I’m willing to share.
